Root Canal Treatment

A root canal treatment is the removal of the contents of the canal within the root of a tooth. The root canal is the hollow section of a tooth which contains the nerve tissues, blood vessels and other cells, which is also known as the pulp.

A root canal procedure is a treatment that is used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, Dr Hajee will remove the nerve and the pulp inside of the tooth, which will be cleaned and sealed. Left untreated, the tissue that is surrounding the tooth will become infected, and abscesses may form.

The root canal procedure is usually met with fear, but wrongfully so as it is relatively painless under local anaesthetic when treated at the correct time. We usually localize your infection first so as to minimize any pain. Root canal treatment is aimed at removing the infected nerve tissue within the tooth and sterilizing the canals. These canals are then sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The anterior teeth usually have 1 or 2 canals. Sometimes 3. Posterior teeth may have up to 5 canals or more.

The dentist will expertly locate these canals using digital technology and complete the root canal treatment painlessly in order to restore your teeth.

Dr Hajee usually recommends that root treated teeth be crowned. This is to restore the strength of the tooth and make it suitable for the heavy biting forces.

In some instances, the decay may be extensive, or the tooth tissue after treatment can be too little, causing the tooth to become brittle and weak. In this case, one may consider the option of extraction or removal of the tooth. We have several replacement options for missing teeth such as implants or bridges.
